The United Press for Development Network (UPDN), a leading advocate for press freedom and justice, has written a petition to President John Dramani Mahama in commemoration of the sixth anniversary of the tragic murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale (“Ahmed Suale” as he is popularly called). The group is urging the government to reopen investigation into the murder of Ahmed Suale, among other demands, to arrive at a conclusion of the matter and bring perpetrators to book.

In a statement signed by the president of UPDN, Rev. Kofi Asante Mensah, “Thursday, January 16 marks six years since this horrific incident,” therefore “as an organization committed to upholding the values of accountability, press freedom, and human rights, we believe this anniversary is a sobering reminder of the need to revisit the case with renewed vigour and commitment.” According to the group, its petition was delivered to the Office of the President on Wednesday listing 4 issues that require urgent attention:

  1. Renewed Investigation Efforts: We urge a comprehensive reopening of the investigation into Ahmed’s murder, with transparency and accountability at its core.
  2. Provision of Resources for Justice: We appeal for the allocation of necessary resources to ensure the success of the investigation, including the involvement of international forensic and investigative experts, if required.
  3. Public Updates: We request regular communication on progress in the case to assure Ghanaians that justice is being actively pursued.
  4. Strengthened Media Protections: We advocate for robust legal and institutional safeguards for journalists, ensuring their safety and freedom to operate without fear.

The group further urged all well-meaning Ghanaians, media organizations, and civil society groups to join them in demanding accountability and justice for Ahmed Hussein-Suale. To them, “this is not just about one journalist; it is about protecting the integrity of Ghana’s democracy and safeguarding the lives of those who speak truth to power.”
