
The Senior Partner at KPMG Ghana, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has been appointment Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) effective January 21, 2025.
The appointment, confirmed in a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, made under Article 195(1) of Ghana’s Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791), entrusts Mr. Sarpong with the responsibility of steering the GRA’s operations pending consultation with the Public Services Commission and receipt of constitutionally required advice.
Anthony Sarpong brings over two decades of experience in audit, financial risk management, and corporate advisory services, having worked across Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. As Senior Partner at KPMG, he provided strategic leadership, managed operations, and overseen large-scale, complex projects. His tenure at KPMG also includes serving as Partner and Head of Audit, where he led the Financial Services sector and Risk Management for the Ghana practice.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Sarpong is affiliated with key organizations such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA). He holds an MSc in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester, and a First-Class Honours degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana.
The Office of the President which praised his wealth of experience, expressed confidence that leadership will enhance the GRA’s ability to mobilize revenue effectively and enforce tax compliance in a challenging economic climate.
This appointment comes as Ghana intensifies efforts to expand its tax base and improve revenue collection to address fiscal challenges. Ghana’s new finance minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson had earlier stated his target was to raise the country’s Tax-to-GDP from 13% to 16%.
Mr. Sarpong is expected to formally accept the appointment within 14 days.
