A UK-based Africa-focused global telecommunication firm, Telecel Group, has acquired majority stake in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited which was previously held by Vodafone Group. The 70% majority shares in Vodafone Ghana were relinquished to Telecel Group in February 2023, by February 2024 Vodafone Ghana was fully rebranded to Telecel. Government of Ghana still holds its 30% shares in Telecel.
Speaking at the launch of the network in Accra on Tuesday, March 12 amidst fanfare, CEO of Telecel Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai said the rebranding marks a renewed commitment in investment into the network which will translate into an improvement in customer service and its financial service delivery. According to her, continuing on the work of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, the new Telecel Ghana Foundation would enhance its mandate by focusing on communities and startups.
“I think one of the big things that touch my heart is the fact that we are going to continue with the work we are doing with the foundation, but a big investment into communities and investing into startups.”
She then assured customers of a better network experience under the new brand.
Telecel Global is operational in over 27 countries worldwide which owns, operates and manages mobile operators in Central Africa and Ghana. It has an active customer base of 6 million and operates a B2B/B2C/B2G model with a goal to enhance business opportunities and contribute to a digitally empowered Africa.
The brand was first unveiled to employees at an event dubbed ‘Telecel Day’ at the Accra International Conference Centre. A second ceremony was held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, where Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia unveiled the Telecel brand in the presence of a cross-section of stakeholders including government and community representatives, media, industry leaders and customers.
Dr. Bawumia underscored the importance of telecommunications in today’s economy.
He said, “Telecommunication plays a pivotal role in shaping our modern society. It bridges distances, connects people, and empowers communities.”
The main launch at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange was attended by senior management of Telecel Group and Telecel Ghana including Chief Operations Officer Mohamad Ghaddar, Group CEO and Co-founder Moh Damush, as well as Executive Chairman and Co-founder Nicholas Bourg among others.
Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, in whose constituency Telecel Ghana’s corporate head office is located was pleased with the progress of the company. Ms Alhassan was however confident that Telecel’s operations in Ghana will enhance socio-economic development in the country through job creation, promote financial inclusion and diversity.
