In this episode we will meet a medical doctor who also runs a business. Quite impressive. Enjoy!
Could you kindly introduce yourself?
Dr Bibata Sadiq-Braimah.
Tell us all about Biba’s Shea Butter.
Bibas sheabutter makes organic shea butter products. Using natural raw shea butter we make lovelovely whipped body butters, shea scrubs, shea soaps. We flavor and colour them with natural scents and colors, like Sorrel (sobolo), strawberry powder, cinnamon, honey and so on.
What gave you the idea for the business?
I suffered for years finding the right products for my skin type that wouldn’t have me break out into pimples or bleach my skin. I spoke to a few friends about it and found out they also hahad the same problems. so I decided to go all natural, no preservatives, no chemicals.
Did you tell people about your idea? How did they receive it?
I told my parents about it, they loved the idea. I also talked to friends and colleagues about it and they showed a lot of interest in it.
What kind of market did you have in mind for your product?
Anyone who’s tired of using products that do not give them the satisfaction they want. Anyone who wants to support small businesses and made in Ghana businesses.
How difficult was it to start?
It’s been a little difficult marketing it, but I can’t complain. I love what I do, I believe in what I do and I trust what I do.
What challenges do you face on a day-to-day basis?
Getting reliable delivery people.
How do you market your business?
I advertise on social media – instagram, facebook and twitter.
What has the response to Biba’s Shea Butter been so far?
So far I’ve had positive responses. A few critiques here and there, but II’m open to change so I don’t mind that.
Do you have any employees? What does someone have to do to work with you?
So far it’s just me and my mum 🙂
How does entrepreneurship compare to a regular job?
I’m currently unemployed and taking classes, and I try not to let it interfere with my school work.
What have you learnt about running a business that no one could have told you before you started?
You work 24/7. A client wants something and they want it now. So you have to make sure they get it when they want it. It’s very demanding.
What can government do to help young entrepreneurs?
It can make the process of registering with the Food and Drugs Board much less cumbersome.
Any advice to other entrepreneurs or would-be entrepreneurs?
Do something you love. Every business is hard but if you do something you love and believe in it, it’ll seem less like work.
